The atmosphere in the Loose Women studio intensified dramatically when Denise Welch unexpectedly shouted at her co-host Janet Street-Porter, insisting that she be quiet.

A fiery debate erupted between Loose Women panellists Denise Welch and Janet Street-Porter on February 25, 2025,

as the pair clashed over the latest legislative changes proposed by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

The discussion centered around new police powers designed to combat mobile phone theft,

but it quickly escalated into a heated argument about broader political and social issues, including emigration and human rights.

The day’s episode of Loose Women saw the usual mix of current affairs and candid conversation,

with Ruth Langsford hosting alongside regular panellists Janet, Denise, and Coleen Nolan.

The show’s opening discussion covered various headline topics,

including the rise in energy prices and the need for tech companies to improve protection against online abuse. However, it was the new police powers, announced by Cooper, that sparked the most intense debate.

The proposed legislation would allow police officers to search properties without a warrant if stolen items have been geolocated, specifically targeting mobile phone theft. While the panel largely agreed on the necessity of this new measure, the disagreement flared when the conversation shifted to its potential impact on the resources and workload of law enforcement across the country.

It was during this part of the discussion that Denise raised the question of whether the UK was truly the best place to live in light of such issues. She suggested that perhaps emigration might be a solution for Brits who were dissatisfied with the country’s approach to criminal justice and street violence. This is where her clash with Janet began.

Janet, who has always been vocal about her views on national politics, immediately hit back. She accused Denise of being short-sighted and “selfish” for even suggesting emigration as an option. Janet passionately defended the UK, arguing, “You would flee a country which does have a democratic tradition, does have free speech, and does respect human rights, and rush to a place where they are like by-the-by.” Her comments clearly struck a nerve with Denise, who responded by criticizing the UK’s approach to criminal justice.

“In this country, we respect the criminals’ human rights more than the blooming victims’ human rights,” Denise remarked, drawing applause from the live studio audience. The moment added fuel to the already heated debate, with the two women firmly standing their ground on the issue.

Janet, however, was not convinced by Denise’s argument. She continued to insist that the solution to the country’s problems was not to run away, but to stay and fight for change. “Yes, people are depressed, and people do feel let down by Labour, but the way to change it is to get elected and change it yourself. Stop winging,” she said, her frustration with the situation clearly evident.

The exchange became so intense that Denise, in an attempt to quash the argument, jokingly suggested that Janet should consider running for Prime Minister. “Well, why don’t you go be Prime Minister? I’ve said it before,” Denise snapped, to cheers from the studio audience. Ruth Langsford, ever the peacemaker, seized the moment and added, “Janet for Prime Minister, everybody! You’d definitely get my vote.”

The off-the-cuff remarks about Janet potentially becoming Prime Minister lightened the mood for a moment, but the conversation quickly turned back to its serious tone. Despite the clash, the debate provided an insightful look into the differing views on the state of the nation and the complex issues surrounding criminal justice, human rights, and political change.

Meanwhile, in another part of the show, Ruth Langsford took the opportunity to discuss personal health issues. In a segment about skin care, Ruth shared her recent experiences with mole checks and encouraged viewers to be more vigilant about their health. She revealed that she had recently had a mole checked, reassuring the audience that there was nothing to worry about.

Ruth’s health update was timely, as it prompted a wider conversation about the importance of looking after one’s body as they age. Coleen Nolan, in a lighter moment, teased Ruth about her earlier appearance on the show, joking that Ruth had gone “green” earlier in the day, to which Ruth responded humorously that she wasn’t sure why but thought it might have been due to the early start.

In addition to the lively Loose Women discussion, viewers were also treated to some exciting behind-the-scenes news about the show. Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is reportedly in talks to join the show as a permanent presenter. Following a series of successful guest appearances, Sarah is said to be undergoing a trial period with the producers to potentially join the roster of regular panellists.

The episode of Loose Women thus provided a mixture of political discourse, personal stories, and lighthearted moments, proving once again why the show remains a popular platform for discussing the issues that matter most to its viewers. The clash between Denise and Janet is a prime example of the show’s ability to generate compelling conversations on a range of important topics, from national legislation to personal health matters.
