Craig Melvin still finds it surreal that he’s now co-hosting Today, stepping into a role once held by Hoda Kotb. The NBC journalist, who has spent years as a familiar face on morning television, recently opened up about how he never imagined himself in this position.
“There aren’t many institutions in television that have stood the test of time, and being part of one is an incredible honor,” he shared in a recent interview. “I honestly never thought I’d be the guy in this seat. But then I got the call about Hoda leaving, and I thought, ‘Wow, this is really happening.’”
For Melvin, the opportunity is particularly meaningful. Growing up in South Carolina, he was an avid Today viewer, structuring his morning routine around the show. “I used to time my mornings to Today. By the 7:55 a.m. commercial break, I knew I had to be out the door for school,” he recalled.

“My dressing room is just a couple doors down from hers, and she knocked one morning, which was unusual,” he shared. “She walked in and said, ‘I just wanted to tell you something. I’m leaving.’”
His first instinct was concern. “I immediately asked, ‘Are you sick? Is everything OK?’ because people don’t just walk away from jobs like this,” he admitted. Even after she reassured him that it was her choice, he went back later to double-check.
