Kelly Ripa left her audience shocked by stating that her spouse, Mark, could potentially be attacked by random people whenever he picks up his phone. What’s the reason behind this?

Mark Consuelos may be known for his charm and charisma on television,

but according to his wife and co-host, Kelly Ripa, his phone etiquette leaves much to be desired.

During a lighthearted segment on Live with Kelly and Mark, the couple delved into the way Consuelos ends phone calls—abruptly, without fanfare,

and often leaving the other person confused.

Mark Consuelos’ Notorious Hang-Up Habit

The topic arose on Tuesday’s episode when the hosts discussed a news story about a U.K. school class designed to help Gen Z students overcome “telephobia”—a term describing anxiety over phone conversations.

This led Consuelos to admit something about himself:

“I’ve been told I get off the phone abruptly,” he confessed.

Ripa, never one to let a funny quirk slide, quickly backed up this claim.

“Every time you get off the phone, everybody thinks they’re in a fight with you, 100%,” she said, eliciting laughs from the audience.

But for Consuelos, there’s nothing rude about it—just efficiency.

“When we’re done talking, we’re done,” he reasoned.

Ripa, however, argued that sometimes he doesn’t even say goodbye before hanging up.

Does Mark Consuelos Actually Say Goodbye?

In an attempt to defend himself, Consuelos maintained that he does, in fact, say goodbye.

“No, I say goodbye. I’m like, ‘Bye,’” he explained. But he then admitted, “When I push the hang-up, I hear people still talking.”

This admission only fueled Ripa’s argument that his phone demeanor is less than warm. She went so far as to say, “You don’t have a good demeanor.”

Consuelos, slightly taken aback, sought clarification. “In general?” he asked. “Just on the phone?”

Ripa elaborated that his “phone voice” and “FaceTime voice” come off as “very unfriendly.” When he asked her to demonstrate, she jokingly declined.

“I don’t have that level of hostility in me,” she quipped.

A Birthday Call That Highlighted the Problem

Ripa then shared a specific example involving one of their children’s birthdays. While she refrained from naming which of their three adult children—Michael, 27, Lola, 23, or Joaquin, 22—it was, she painted a clear picture of what happened.

“You were, like, giving him a list of tasks that he had to accomplish,” she recalled. “And I was like, ‘And happy birthday!’ I kept coming in with, ‘And happy birthday!’”

Consuelos defended himself, noting that this was his third call with that child on their birthday. However, he conceded that perhaps he could work on his delivery.

“I have to get better at that,” he admitted. “Maybe I should take that class.”

A Different Approach for Italian Calls

Despite his seemingly abrupt phone habits, Consuelos noted that his calls to Italy—where his mother is from and where he owns a soccer team—are handled quite differently.

“When I talk to my family in Italy, it’s completely different,” he explained.

Ripa immediately agreed, saying it was “one of the first things” she noticed about Consuelos’ conversations with his parents. Unlike his usual quick hang-ups, these calls end with multiple drawn-out goodbyes.

“There are so many ‘ciaos,’” she said, mimicking the repetitive sign-offs.

Will Mark Consuelos Change His Phone Habits?

Though the conversation was filled with playful banter, Consuelos acknowledged that perhaps he should work on his phone etiquette—at least with people who aren’t used to his no-nonsense approach.

Whether or not he actually changes remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his abrupt hang-ups will continue to be a source of amusement for Ripa—and likely their audience as well.
