Savannah Guthrie admits she finds it difficult to tolerate Hoda Kotb for “always stealing the spotlight”: “Even when the occasion was supposed to be about me.”

Savannah Guthrie experienced an unforgettable moment when her longtime friend and former Today co-host, Hoda Kotb, surprised her at a book signing event.

The heartwarming interaction, which was captured on camera, showcased the deep bond between the two broadcasters and left fans emotional.

A Surprise That Left Savannah Stunned

On February 25, Savannah was in Ridgewood, New Jersey, promoting her new children’s book, Mostly What God Does is Love You.

As she made her way into the venue, she was met with applause from the audience. But before she could settle in, a familiar voice called out: “Can I be first?”

To Savannah’s shock, it was Hoda, who had secretly made the trip to support her friend.

Holding a book over her face to remain unnoticed, Hoda waited for the perfect moment to reveal herself. As soon as Savannah saw her, disbelief washed over her face.

The two women embraced in an emotional hug, with Hoda sharing that she had driven all the way to New Jersey just to be there. “I love you,” Hoda told her, while Savannah, still stunned, kissed her cheek and hugged her again.

Friendship and Support

Hoda used the moment to highlight their strong friendship, telling the crowd that Savannah had always been someone who showed up for people. “Let me tell you what this girl has done ever since I’ve known her—she shows up for people,” she said. Savannah, in return, responded, “So do you.”

The touching moment resonated with fans, who flooded social media with heartfelt comments. Hoda later posted the video of the surprise on Instagram, captioning it: “The secret plot to surprise @savannahguthrie at her book signing event in Ridgewood, New Jersey…. Swipe xo.”

Fans quickly expressed their joy in the comments, with one writing, “I love this so much!!! You showed up, and that’s what life is about.” Others reminisced about their time as co-hosts, saying, “I miss seeing the two of you together every day.”

Savannah also shared a series of photos from the event, captioning them, “Happiness is… your friend surprising—no, SHOCKING you—by showing up at your book event. @hodakotb there is just no one like you. My biggest cheerleader from beginning to end.”

Savannah Reflects on Hoda’s Surprise

The following morning, during her Today broadcast, Savannah reflected on the moment, still amazed by what had happened. “I thought I was hallucinating. It made me feel so good,” she said. “It was just amazing. It’s so, so sweet and so, so her.”

The surprise was a reminder of the special connection the two have shared over the years. While Hoda stepped away from Today earlier this year, their friendship remains as strong as ever.

Hoda’s Departure and Craig Melvin’s New Role

Since leaving Today in January, Hoda has been focusing on her personal life, settling into her new home in the suburbs with her daughters, Haley, 8, and Hope, 5. Though her departure was bittersweet, Savannah recently spoke about her admiration for Hoda’s decision.

“I’m heartbroken. But I’m also thrilled for her and proud of her,” Savannah shared in an interview. “That is so gutsy—to leave something you love at the height of your excellence and say, ‘I’m dreaming this bigger dream for myself.’”

Savannah recalled Hoda telling her that turning 60 made her realize she could continue in her role for another decade, but she ultimately chose to take a risk and step into something new. Fortunately, Today had a seamless transition, with Craig Melvin stepping in as her early morning co-anchor.

“Lucky [for] us that the perfect person was right there waiting in the wings,” Savannah said. “[Craig] has stepped into the role seamlessly.”

A Friendship That Stands the Test of Time

While Hoda has moved on from Today, her presence is still deeply felt, especially in moments like these. The surprise visit at Savannah’s book signing was a testament to their enduring friendship and the way they continue to lift each other up, even outside the studio.

As fans continue to follow their journeys, one thing is certain—whether on-screen or off, Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb will always be there for each other, proving that true friendship never fades.
