Whoopi Goldberg, a host on The View, has given a serious caution to Selena Gomez regarding the medication the singer is taking to maintain her current physique, stating, “The cost could be her life…”

On Tuesday’s episode of The View, the co-hosts engaged in a spirited discussion about body image, weight loss, and the scrutiny celebrities face regarding their appearances.

The conversation stemmed from a recent Glamour magazine article examining the phenomenon of fans feeling betrayed

when celebrities who previously championed body positivity undergo dramatic weight loss.

The Debate Over Celebrity Weight Loss and Public Perception

Co-host Sunny Hostin pointed out that the article referenced Selena Gomez’s recent appearance at the 2025 SAG Awards

as an example of how public reactions to celebrity transformations can be intense.

She agreed with Joy Behar that weight-related conversations tend to disproportionately target women in the entertainment industry.

Hostin further emphasized that in Gomez’s case, her changing weight is directly linked to her health struggles, particularly her battle with lupus. “You don’t know what’s going on in that person’s life,” Hostin stated. “Selena Gomez suffers from lupus. Weight is part of that condition.” She also noted that Gomez’s recent weight loss might have been due to her health rather than aesthetic reasons.

Whoopi Goldberg Shuts Down the Conversation

Before the discussion could continue, Whoopi Goldberg stepped in to make her stance clear. Interrupting Hostin, she firmly stated, “But it’s none of your business.”

Goldberg doubled down on her point, stressing that celebrities, like all individuals, make personal choices regarding their bodies, and the public has no right to scrutinize or comment on those choices. “It’s none of your business. Everybody makes their choice in life,” she reiterated, highlighting the importance of respecting personal autonomy.

Alyssa Farah Griffin on Hollywood’s Beauty Standards

Conservative commentator Alyssa Farah Griffin contributed her perspective, arguing that red carpet events are “highlight reels,” where stars are expected to look their best. She compared celebrity appearances to the curated perfection seen on social media, where individuals present only the most polished versions of themselves.

Griffin acknowledged that while body positivity is a crucial movement, it can sometimes swing too far in either direction. She pointed out that some celebrities might feel pressure to lose weight to fit into industry standards, while others might face scrutiny for gaining weight. Ultimately, she argued, people should focus on what is “right and healthy for them as individuals.”

Selena Gomez’s Ongoing Battle with Body Shaming

Selena Gomez has been candid about the challenges she has faced due to public scrutiny over her body. As someone who grew up in the spotlight, she has repeatedly found herself at the center of conversations about weight and beauty standards.

In 2015, after paparazzi photos of her in a swimsuit surfaced, Gomez faced an onslaught of criticism regarding her body. In an interview, she expressed her frustration, calling the body-shaming “disgusting” and admitting that it deeply affected her self-esteem.

By 2019, she opened up even more about how her health struggles—battling lupus, kidney issues, and high blood pressure—contributed to fluctuations in her weight. She revealed that being publicly judged over something beyond her control took a serious emotional toll.

“I fluctuate… and that got to me big time. That really messed me up for a bit,” Gomez shared.

Gomez’s Continued Advocacy for Body Positivity and Mental Health

Despite facing criticism, Gomez has remained open about her experiences, using her platform to advocate for body positivity and mental health awareness.

At a Women in Film event in September 2024, she spoke candidly about her personal struggles while sitting next to her younger sister, Gracie.

“I truly believe that there is power in being vulnerable and telling people when you need help,” she said, according to fan-shared videos.

She also addressed deeply personal topics, including her inability to carry children due to health complications. “I only want to be an advocate for women, and that’s why I share. That’s why I like to be honest, because everybody is going through something… I’m me, and that’s all I can be.”

The Bigger Picture: Respecting Personal Choices

Whoopi Goldberg’s blunt remark—”None of your business”—reflects a growing sentiment that conversations around celebrity bodies, particularly weight changes, need to shift. Whether a star loses weight for health reasons, personal preference, or career choices, it remains a private matter.

The discussion on The View highlighted how the media and public can sometimes place unfair expectations on celebrities, turning personal health and appearance into topics of debate. As Selena Gomez and others have pointed out, body changes are a natural part of life, and judging individuals—especially without understanding their circumstances—can be both harmful and intrusive.

In the end, Goldberg’s statement serves as a reminder that everyone deserves respect when it comes to their body, regardless of their level of fame.
